While platforming games do not appeal to everyone, players can spend a few good hours going through obstacle courses and hunting a few easter eggs tucked away by the developers. If you just bought a PlayStation 5 or had one at launch, it would be a shame to miss experiencing a game that is completely free in 2025. Alongside releasing the four special bots and a new launch trailer for Astro Bot, Sony has announced a “special celebration countdown” for the game in Astro’s Playroom. g28 com have until September 6 to pre-order the game and unlock costumes and paints for the DualSpeeder before everyone else. It’s worth noting however that this isn’t the same model from the demo. Earn trophies for specific actions like Twisting Metal (jumping 3 times during a spin attack on ice). Double-check the trophy list to confirm all requirements are met before finalizing your journey to 100% completion. Several silver trophies are tied to collecting specific items like puzzle pieces and artifacts.
At the very start of Raytrace Ruins, there are some Bots on the right playing Ninja Bots. This was a free add-on to 2013 PS4 pack-in title The Playroom by SCE Japan Studio, which is the originator of the Bots and actually precedes the creation of Astro. On the right side of the giant pool at the end of Hotel Hopalot, you can find some Bots dancing next to two cardboard cutouts. These reference 1996’s PaRappa the Rapper and 1999’s Um Jammer Lammy for the PS1, both developed by NanaOn-Sha.
The question is should you play it and the answer is a resounding yes if you’ve ever found yourself nostalgic for PlayStation as a brand or if you enjoy 3D platformers. Once you finish all the levels at least once you’ll unlock a series of “speed run” levels that are variants off of the game’s main levels. I appreciated these because they weren’t just the same exact levels with a timer added, but instead offered totally new paths and obstacles through a stage that was merely themed after the existing level. You’ll recognize backgrounds and a few elements, but they may as well be new levels.
Trophies in Astro Playroom serve as rewarding milestones that enhance gameplay and motivation. They encourage exploration‚ completion of levels‚ and discovery of hidden collectibles like puzzle pieces and artifacts. Earning trophies provides a sense of accomplishment and showcases mastery of the game’s creative levels and DualSense features.
What’s so remarkable about Astro’s Playroom is that while it’s ostensibly about showing off the features of the PlayStation 5, it’s also a fabulous platformer. Levels constantly throw me new toys to play with that totally change the way the level plays. Later levels include a spaceship (with rockets powered by the adaptive triggers) and a rolling ball (controlled by swiping the touchpad on the DualSense), intermingled with platforming sequences.
The game is a fantastic tech demo for the DualSense controller while also being an enjoyable platformer in its own right. Astro’s Playroom has been described as a love letter to PlayStation, as the game is full of references to past and present Sony franchises. As you’re exploring Playroom’s levels you’ll also stumble across Astro Bots wearing a blue cap and holding a camera. They’re mostly there for the fun of it all rather than to accumulate anything, but every single one of them made me smile, even the few that I had to take a moment to try and guess at. I won’t spoil any more here so as to not rob anyone of the joy of first discovering them.

Artifact 2/2 “DUALSHOCK 2 Controller” – When you reach the rocket ship, stay on the ground level and run to the back of the platform. Knock the pile of colored crates out of the way to find a wire pull, which reveals this artifact. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – After jumping past the first cannon, this puzzle piece is to the left of the handholds above. Puzzle Piece 4/4 – After defeating the boss, go halfway across the newly revealed tightrope and look to the right. In a hole in the wall, you can see a spot to shoot, and when you do it reveals a new platform that has this puzzle piece at the end.
After going through a small round room with Shock Orbs in it, you’ll go up a tall shaft with fans trying to push you into Shock Walls. When you get to the very top, look in the background to spot two bots playing “Bot Fighter”. This is a reference to Street Fighter, Capcom’s famous fighting game franchise that debuted in 1987. While the original Street Fighter never came to PS1, Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter did.
